Palaeontology is much more than the study of fossils – it is about the study of all life in the past. The fossil record is an amazing archive of evolutionary that continues to yield surprises in terms of the nature and quality of data preserved in the rock record. However, it is not the only archive of evolutionary history – another is recorded in the genomes of all living organisms and it is possible to obtain incredible insights into ancient ancestors through comparisons of the genes and genomes of their living relatives. Fossils complement this record, providing constraints on the timing of events recorded in genomes, by the filling gaps in the genomic record left by extinction, providing insights into bodyplan evolution intermediate of living lineages. This is molecular paleobiology – a strong focus of research in the Bristol Palaeobiology Research Group, including the Donoghue, Pisani, Vinther and Williams Labs
